REVERIE OF RIRA
*
A LIVING HISTORY IS SUNG
BY TELLING ITS MELODY
--ANTONIO MACHADO
*
Rverie is not only illusion ,but in a more extensive meaning: dream, daydraeam and nocturnal dream* or being lost in one's thoughts. It could happen with sound and song.a reverie of hearing. It also appears in cry and howl.In a sourdined society, reverie is sourdined and muted,as one finds in Nima's RIRA,or more eloquent:REVERIE OF RIRA.
RIRA ,the poem Nima Yushij wrote in 1331/1952,during mohamad reza shah's rule ,but inspired by muted society and era of Reza Shah,is a sound image of sourdined Iran.As Nima himself mentioned:"contrary to the past, the sound will come out of a lover heart, living, natural and eloquent"He does not believe this is a sound by human being's voice. But on the other hand, this is human being sound,as nothing is meaningless, albeit looking or sounding that way.
"RIRA ...is either IRAN,the name of the country or a popular name of a woman,or the unseen who is hidden in that overwhelming darkness of night. That is a favorite image of Nima's poetry. So to hear a poet who calls for HIRAN,IRAN,...HEY IRAN...[EY IRAN]...AY IRAN...MIRA,VIRA...AMIRA...MIRAN...VIRAN...HEARAN...RA...AH...,etc..."** or even ZIRA...NIMA
This is the same movements of things,in the rush of relationship between mind and "technique' or Tarz-e Sanati in Nima's word.If Nima's poem,EY SHAB/O NIGHT feels that its voice comes out weak, but is audacious in containing and memorizing the sound of people and follow them through cries. That is,in Nima's notes,"a harmony of cries of submissives and their supports on the battle field .Cries as cold as waves in the sea ,or warm as flames of fire.Dark and grim and still revolutionary.***
RIRA could be the lost voice of Nima,in "telling and singing",as Octavio Paz put it in his "Other Voice".
It is "to express loneliness in a long night of a gloomy life and society, all by his word in his world."**

NIMA YUSHIJ : RIRA

*
RIRA there is a song tonight
from behind the woods that
brings to eyes
a dark bright reflection
or ruined image
someone might be singing
But this is not the man's voice
that I have heard before
regularly
in the deep of the night
deeper than
my sorrows
and I know
all the men's voice
by heart.
One night
on the boat
they sang so sad
that I still see
the horrific sea
in my dreams
RIRA,RIRA
The sky wishes to sing
in this black night
she is not with herself
she's gone with her voice
but can not sing.
